The American Saddlebred mare carries her head and long tail very high, which is typical of this horse. Previously, American Saddlebreds were used as riding and draft horses for American settlers. Today they are mainly used in show riding. In addition to walking, trotting and galloping, some also master other gaits such as the trot-like "slowgait" and "rack" with high knee lifts.
